For almost 10 years, UVSC has had a Gay Straight Alliance club, and almost all of the members have been gay or bisexual. Now is the time, said club President Austin Smith, for straight people who share a strong belief in human rights to join also.Smith, who has been president of the club since the spring semester, notes that in a conservative culture like the one in Utah County, people are sometimes content with not standing up for what they believe in.

The office of International Affairs hosted Wendy Widmann de Berger, wife of Guatemalan President Oscar Berger Perdomo, at UVSC on Nov. 1 as a guest speaker. This was her first visit to Utah. The day after her speech at UVSC, Berger received the Enterprise Mentor International’s First Annual International Service Award in Salt Lake City.

He has worked for the Church Educational System for 33 years teaching throughout the United States and Canada.

UVSC students win Student Grammy Awards

UVSC digital media students recently won awards from the Audio Engineering Society’s annual Student Grammy Award Competition in New York City. The competition had 35-40 schools competing and had judges from industry professionals from major record labels. Sean Wolsey and Jeremy Redd participated in the hardware design competition and took third place in circuit design.

Operation Smile club raises funds

UVSC’s recent Halloween dance on Friday, Oct. 26 was co-sponsored by ASUVSC and the Operation Smile club. The club received a cut of the event’s proceeds and raised an additional $60.40 from individual donations during the dance.The money collected will be directly donated to Operation Smile.

Oct. 18. SEARCH WARRANT-UVSC police served a search warrant on a residence in Orem after a MacBook Pro laptop valued at $2,300 was stolen from the UVSC Bookstore the day before. The laptop was recovered early on the morning of Oct. 19, along with the suspect being arrested.

UVSC President William Sederburg will receive the 2007 Parry D. Sorensen Communicator of the Year award for his work as president of the school. The award will be presented on Nov. 7 in Salt Lake City at the Wells Fargo Building. This award is one given by the Public Relations Society of America during the Golden Spike Awards for Utah’s elite business communicators.
