At Utah Valley University, many may not know that there is a semi-pro basketball team playing at the McKay Events Center. The Utah Flash is a developmental basketball team whose NBA affiliates are the Utah Jazz and the Boston Celtics. After 22 games in their season, the Utah Flash are 13-9 and sitting in third place in the Western Division behind the Bakersfield Jam and the first place Idaho Stampede.
In sports, there are two stories fans love the most: the storied franchise and the Cinderella tale. This year, Super Bowl XLIII features both. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals are going to battle for the Lombardi Trophy and the top spot in the football world.
The UVU men’s basketball team had three players score in double digits, but ultimately fell to the Mavericks of the University of Texas at Arlington, 75-64. Senior guard Ryan Toolson led all Wolverines with 17; senior center Brett Ravenberg set a new season high with 10 points, and sophomore forward Justin Baker had 10 points off the bench.
While most of the student body was off visiting their families and eating their body weight in food, the UVU men’s basketball team had some work to do. The Wolverines went 2-2 over the winter break, with wins coming against Southern Utah University and Norfolk State and losses against Utah State University and Montana State.
The Wolverines hosted the University of California-Santa Barbara Gauchos in their first homecoming game as a university. However it was not a great start, as the Gauchos would hand the Wolverines their second loss of the season, 62-57. “Santa Barbara came out very aggressive,” UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker said.

During autumn, a lot of things start changing. However, in mid-November, there are two certainties: Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and college football is in full force. In the first ever World Series delayed by rain, there is no wonder that the game ended a quarter-century championship drought in the city of brotherly love. The Philadelphia Phillies won their first World Series since 1980 over the Tampa Bay Rays and brought the city of Philadelphia its first championship since 1983, when the 76ers won an NBA title.
Perhaps not the two teams television executives wanted in the World Series, but the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies are going to compete for the top spot in the baseball world. The Rays at the beginning of the season were not given the time of day in the high powered American League East, sharing the division with the defending champion Boston Red Sox and the evil empire that is the New York Yankees.
