Wolverines suffer first home loss

After nearly being flawless at home and with a five game winning streak under their belts, the women’s soccer team suffered a setback, falling last week to Cal State Bakersfield 3-1. The Wolverines led the Roadrunners 1-0 in the first half, but Cal State came out strong in the second half with two goals in the first 10 minutes.

Jared Keller, a red shirt sophomore from Orem, doesn’t run just as a passion but, more importantly, runs for his teammates. Running cross-country for Keller is all about his fellow teammates. “I love the team aspect. You rely on the other runners, you know you’re racing for your teammates, and they are relying on you,” Keller said.

Oct. 9, 2008 marked the start of a new era for Utah soccer. Rio Tinto Stadium is the new home for Real Salt Lake. It is the first soccer specific stadium built in Utah. RSL took on the New York Red Bulls in front of a sold-out stadium of 20,008 people. The final score was 1-1, RSL one point.

The UV Thunder will compete in the Arena Indoor Football Association under the tutelage of first-year head coach Chad DeGrenier, who played in the Arena League for seven years.

Perhaps not the two teams television executives wanted in the World Series, but the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies are going to compete for the top spot in the baseball world. The Rays at the beginning of the season were not given the time of day in the high powered American League East, sharing the division with the defending champion Boston Red Sox and the evil empire that is the New York Yankees.

Taking control early, the Wolverines scored and looked to beat University of Idaho on their home field 1-0. That was until U of I scored with less than eight minutes left in regulation that tied the game 1-1 and pushed it into double overtime. Beginning overtime the Wolverines were reminded that they haven’t lost a home game this season.

The women’s volleyball team beat the Cougars of Chicago State last week, 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-14). This makes back-to-back wins for the lady Wolverines, and put Chicago State at 0-20 this season. “It is difficult to stay focused against a team that’s struggling,” Coach Sam Atoa said after the victory.
