A blazing 96 degrees and a crowd dying of heat didn’t stop the Wolverines from defeating Dixie State. After a hard fought first half both teams went into half time scoreless. “In the first half we were a little sluggish,” UVU head coach Brent Anderson said.

At the end of last season, the UVU women’s soccer team flexed its muscle in finishing off a tough season by winning the United Soccer tournament championship. The special thing about last season is that there wasn’t a single senior on the team, and this year that will pay dividends.

UVU announces new track facility

For years the Utah Valley University track and field team hasn’t been able to practice on campus or hold its own meets. For years the Wolverines have had to rent time on a track at Mountain View High School in Orem. But that won’t be the case for long. Last Monday, UVU Athletic Director Mike Jacobsen announced at student athlete orientation that construction on a new track facility would start in the spring.

As another school year rolls around, most sports’ fans turn their attention to collegiate sports, and while UVU is in its first year as a university, the athletic teams have been competing against other universities at the Division I level for several years. In perhaps the best Olympic performance since Michael Phelps swam to eight gold medals the week before, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt bolted his way to history in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, setting new world records in each event. After dominating the 100-meter race earlier in the week with a world-record time of 9.69 seconds his encore was even more impressive. Absolutely burning up the track, Bolt beat former 200-meter world-record holder Michael Johnson’s record by turning in a time of 19.30. He is the first man since Carl Lewis of the United States to sweep the two events.

A few weeks into the second half of the season, the Orem Owlz have let everyone else know who is the boss in the Pioneer League. After falling behind in the standings early, the Owlz have ripped off 14 consecutive wins to regain first place. The winning streak is a franchise best and has the Owlz rolling as the playoffs near. After winning the Pioneer League championship in three of the last four years, Orem is the team to beat when September rolls around.
