UVU assists in its second Habitat for Humanity home

On Thursday, Sept. 3, building construction students and Habitat for Humanity of Utah County (HFHUC) came together to break ground for the partnership’s second home. In spring 2008, the Rico family received the first Habitat for Humanity home, built in part by the UVU Department of Construction Management.

Who ya gonna call?

He’s not as mean as Dirty Harry but not as soft as Barney Fife, but UVU’s own Chief of Police John C. Brewer is the man in charge here on campus. From theft to risk management, he means business. Chief Brewer has been at UVU for a little over two years, but has been a police officer since 1973.

Want to help animals?

On Sept. 9, 1,000 pamphlets were handed out by employees of non-profit organizationVegan Outreach to UVU students. These pamphlets focus on the pain farm animals endure and give those who will take the time to open them the “bottom line” on animal suffering.

The Obama indoctrination

On Sept. 8, President Obama gave a speech before the nation’s K-12 public school students to ring in the new school year on a high note. Or at least he spoke before most of them. You see, some people didn’t think schoolchildren should hear the president speak – after all, he is a pinko-commie-socialist community organizer and these innocent minds should not have to be unwittingly subjected to the political indoctrination of The Party.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor, I am a deaf UVU student. I read a recent article titled “Plight of Utah’s deaf students.” Thank you for supporting the deaf here; we have a lot of oppression and it’s nice to be noticed. I believe students need to be exposed to all cultures because there are so many different kinds and we need to respect them all.

The Sonosopher

Former UVU students and filmmakers, Travis Low and Torben Bernhard, are soon screening their film, “The Sonosopher: Alex Caldiero in Life … in Sound” at UVU, documenting an unusual teacher and his unconventional relationship with language, art and life. The film is based around the creative process of Sicilian-born, Brooklyn-raised Alex Caldiero, UVU’s artist in residence; and the duo plans to submit the film to both national and international film festivals.

Waxing Sonosophical

Alright, I hear the question in your mind: what the hell is sonosophy? Not an easy one to answer. Loosely defined, it might mean “love of sound,” though that doesn’t go far enough. The concept probably has something to do with both sound and poetry, and maybe their expression within a physical space.

More than a poet

He is a mad poet. He is an award-winning artist. He is a self-proclaimed sonsopher. He is an unconventional teacher. He is absolutely unpredictable. He is undeniably moving. He, of course, is Alex Caldiero. Being a pupil in one of Caldiero’s classes is an experience one doesn’t easily forget.
