Welcome back!

Dear Wolverines, Welcome to the Fall 2009 semester! On behalf of the student council we are excited to have so many of our fellow students return and even more excited to welcome more than 4,000 first-time and transfer students to campus! Your experience here will depend a great deal on you and how you choose to become involved in the many opportunities available.

Fundamental firefighting

There is a fully involved residential fire in your city, the bite is, the fire team is on their way, and you are the fire captain in charge of managing the entire crew and saving civilian lives. Professional firefighters across Utah will have more preparation for scenarios such as this because of the new mobile training facility recently presented by the Utah Fire & Rescue Academy (UFRA).

THE LOTS Purple (V): Free Lot The free lot is the farthest parking lot away from all of the school buildings. Though free, you still need a permit to park here. Shuttle busses that take you to different stops around the school leave the bus stop in the South end of the lot at random intervals Monday – Thursday 7am to 10pm, and from 7am to 4pm on Fridays but are not always reliable.

10 Tips for Freshmen

Starting college can be a scary adventure. Some new students find it exciting; however, if you are like me, you may have had a difficult time adjusting to life after high school. I had no idea what was going on when I first started going to school at UVSC.

How to Pull an All-Nighter

It’s a quarter to midnight and sophomore Dave Harris just put Return of the Jedi back on the shelf. He shuffles his feet down the hallway ready to make the plunge into a long-awaited sleep. Just as his thoughts of the day begin to fade into incoherent dreams, Dave’s stomach does a back flip, his eyes snap open, and he finds himself in a cold sweat.

Back 2 School Movies

This list could easily be a cop-out. I mean, list a few John Hughes films and you could have a complete collection, as the recently passed director/magician did define a generation/genre of filmmaking. But here are a few films that will ease you back into the grind of class schedules and textbooks.

The Valley Guide

Welcome back wolverines! This week is jam-packed with things to do. So put down your video game controller, grab a friend and take advantage of your college years. The events calendar has now been expanded to include events in Salt Lake County. If you are interested in listing an arts and entertainment event, contact Amie Wells at wellsam@uvu.

Extra-curricular reading will pay off in more ways than one

Every college student, no matter their major, is required to do intensive and often tedious reading. So why consider reading anything that isn’t an essential part of the curriculum? In his freshman welcome letter, President Holland encouraged incoming students to read two novels; Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and journalist David Oliver Relin, and Revolutionary Characters, by Gordon Wood.

The Biz on Careers and Majors

Ello all you students out there. From freshmen to seniors, young to old (mind, I like mine young), welcome back. Anyway, It’s Aunty Lyds here, doin’ the rounds as it were, and I’ve been getting’ the biz on choosin’ majors. I know for some of you it’s a bit early for figuring out what you’re doing here, but take it from me freshmen, it’s never too early to figure out your major or career.

Fighting the fifteen

That Hot-N-Ready never tasted so good as it does on your first night of independence. Your apartment may be cramped, and the couch that came with it may smell, but that cheap, delicious pizza could not be more perfect. Tomorrow’s Junior Bacon Cheeseburger tastes every bit as good, and so does the next day’s California Burrito.
