Broadbent, Wilson garner weekly awards Utah Valley’s Kayli Broadbent and Allyce Wilson earned Great West Conference Volleyball Players of the Week for the week ending Nov. 9, the league office announced Tuesday. Broadbent collects her second weekly honor after guiding the Wolverines to a 3-0 victory over fellow Great West Conference member Houston Baptist this past week.

The Utah Flash took their first step toward the 2008-2009 season with the ninth overall pick in the D-league draft by picking small forward Denham Brown from Connecticut, who was later traded to the Dakota Wizards for point guard Dontell Jefferson. The Flash were in need of a new point guard after last season’s point guard Kevin Kruger took a deal in Europe.

BYU took advantage of power plays, defeating the Wolverines 13-7 on Friday and 7-2 on Saturday. Both games the Cougars found the open seams in the Wolverines defense, scoring 20 goals after two games while UVU scored only nine. At Seven Peaks Arena on Saturday, BYU scored off a shot from the weak side in the first minute of the game.

Intramural flag football team dominates national tournament

UVU’s flag football team won the Region VI Tournament in Tempe, AZ, which was held Nov. 7-8. This marks the Wolverines third regional championship in the last 5 years. They went into the tournament as the number one seed and won every game going 6-0. Not only did they win every game, they also worked every opponent through the “mercy” rule, which is a rule that ends the game early if a team is ahead by more than 20 points.

A’s add Holliday The low-budget Oakland A’s helped themselves recently as they acquired outfielder Matt Holliday in a trade with the Colorado Rockies. Holliday, a major contributor to the Rockies team from a season ago that went to the World Series, will add his big bat to the Oakland lineup.

Wolverine soccer club finds success

Playing with pace and attacking intent, the UVU men’s soccer club team has won praise from players and fans in the region. For the first time in the institution’s history, UVU men’s soccer represented the university in the best league in Utah. Moreover, they successfully accomplished the daunting task of beating the best team in the premier league, Olympique Montreux 3-1 at home, hence creating history and encouraging a lot of attention from all over by being the only team to cause such a major upset.

After four tournaments, the women’s golf team finished up the first half of their season. Their first tournament took them to Fruit Heights to compete in the Weber State Invitational. “We came in second in the four team tournament that Weber State hosted,” said David DeSantis, women’s head golf coach.
