Looking to lock up a trip to nationals

A No. 2 ranking is no small feat for Utah Valley hockey, but things can get better after this month.Virtually clinching a spot in the national tournament in March is what is at stake when the Wolverines play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Western Classic.

Unga on record track

At 6 feet, 221 pounds, BYU’s Harvey Unga has carried a large portion of the Cougar offensive load this season. While that could be seen as a heavy burden for a red-shirt freshman, Unga handles it week in and week out just fine.Whether he’s rumbling downfield, leaving broken and bruised defenders in his wake, or plucking the ball out of the air on a short swing pass, Unga will be smiling all the way to the end zone.

Nixon thriving through change

Coaching a college basketball team for more than a few years is a rare feat these days.Utah Valley women’s coach Cathy Nixon is one of those who are defying the stereotypes of college coaches as she starts her 13th season at the helm of the Wolverines.Ultimately, Nixon’s commitment to the program stretches to 17 years, as she assisted for four years before taking charge.

Fully loaded to begin season

After coach Nixon’s lady Wolverines handily defeated Eastern Oregon in their one and only preseason game, the coach who has been a fixture of Utah Valley basketball had several reasons to be optimistic about her team’s upcoming season. With several players returning who contributed significantly last season, experience on the floor will be one of the Wolverines’ strengths.

Best season ending with Independent tournament

With the most wins at the NCAA Division I level already in the books, and the regular season out of the way with a game against Nevada Saturday, the women’s volleyball team turns to the Independent Championship.Utah Valley (18-9) will play host to five other schools this weekend for the two-day tournament.

Making most of tournament

With the United Soccer Conference(USC) tournament being played on campus the women’s soccer team is trying to make the most of what has been a tough season. It’s been a rough road at times this season but playing the tournament gives the Wolverines a chance to turn things around a bit.
