Nosferatu

Last year I wrote that UVU’s growing theater department hit puberty with their production of Canyon Suite in December. Nosferatu, however, proves that the awkward stage is over. Theater is essentially storytelling, and in Nosferatu, director Christopher Clark approached the art’s basic function in a way seldom seen in theatrical nuclei like New York or San Francisco — much less in Happy Valley.

Look up in the sky

All-Star Superman is awesome. Let’s just get that out in the open to start off. This book is fantastic in nearly every sense of the word. If you like comic books, you need to read this, no question about it. Now, Superman is a hard sell these days, I realize.

David Archuleta is Now Bigger Than Ever

American Idol star David Archuleta is now bigger than he has ever been. Covering 12 acres Archuleta’s face along with the slogan “Archuleta for President” is cut into a large corn field at Thanksgiving Point for the Cornbelly’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Fest. The original idea was to do cut out the faces of presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain but ultimately ended up deciding on Utah’s own David Archuleta.

Local label North Platte Records to throw party at Velour

Local record company North Platte Records will be throwing a huge party at Velour in Provo on Oct. 24. Local artists RuRu, The Desert Noises, the McKay Stevens Project, and Drew Capener will all be performing. In addition to their performance, a previewing of the next record by The Desert Noises will be included.

Guest author series brings Ed McClanahan to campus

Through the guest author reading series, one of the most prolific authors of our time is coming to campus Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. Ed McClanahan’s writing has been hailed as “a triumph of humor, wisdom, and language.” McClanahan will be reading from his most recent book release, “O the Clear Moment.

Body of Lies: A good spin on espionage

Watch any one of the many trailers or TV spots for Body of Lies and you’re left without a clue as to what the movie is about. Instead, they entice you solely with shots of exploding trucks, the bankable name Ridley Scott, and acting giants Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.

Fire and Rain

New Play Project, the Provo-based “Pioneers in Values-Driven Theatre,” have opened their latest semi-annual theater festival, Fire and Rain. The festivities continue until Oct. 20. According to the Project’s Web site, Fire and Rain is “more raw. Less sappy.

As close to real as it gets

Immediately in the fight between welterweights Jacob South and Simon Ione, Ione threw a bloodying punch to South’s head that simultaneously caused Ione’s shoulder to come out of its socket and left South on the ground. Despite the injury, Ione was able to get in several more punches before the referee stopped the fight nine seconds into the first round.
