Shrivel up and die … of laughter

D. Terry Petrie and Isaac Walters, the chair of and a lecturer for the theatrical arts department respectively, jump-started UVU’s theater season from summer by directing the best production we have ever seen on campus. Flies in the Snuffbox, collected 1880’s Russian comedy sketches by Anton Chekhov, is more than a successful production — it is unadulterated, enlightened entertainment.

The Stand delivers

If you’ve ever read a Stephen King novel, you probably will not be surprised to hear that Marvel Comics has begun to adapt some of his most well known works into graphic novels. The twisted and unique stories King is known for are a perfect fit for the comic book world.

The good, the bad, and the snubbed

For enthusiasts of any kind, there is usually a night where one year’s worth of hard work culminates into one moment of glory. The Super Bowl is this night for football fans, the last game of the NBA Finals for basketball followers, but for people like myself, die-hard television watchers, it’s the Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired live last week.

Bigger than words, wider than pictures

Poets have inflicted on society an inequitable untruth: that no matter the immensity of a scene, no matter the immediacy of a situation, words can adequately capture its essence. However, on Mogwai’s latest release, The Hawk is Howling, these prolific Scots have continued their efforts to unshackle meaning from the bondage of the word.

Choke on this

Carusso and poppy actor Shia LaBeouf teamed up to make Disturbia, I thought to myself, “How lame.” I actually put off screening the movie until the night before it opened. But when I saw it, I was caught off guard by how fun the movie was, how it went from funny awkward teen comedy to dark disturbing thriller in a heartbeat.

“Perfect Musical” at Pioneer Theatre

My Fair Lady is as close to a perfect musical as there is in this world. From its brilliant source material – Shaw’s Pygmalion – to the best score and libretto ever written by Lerner and Loewe, to its audience-pleasing mingling of romance with witty social commentary, My Fair Lady is the rarest of combinations: a classic that’s fun to produce and a joy to watch,” said Pioneer Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Charles Morey.

Of the Valley

On Sept. 6, three workers at Showtime Utah — formerly known as the Grove Theater — in downtown Pleasant Grove witnessed a 20 oz. root beer mug rise up in the air and move at an alarming speed toward the dishwasher, which was about 5 feet away, shattering on impact.
