Across the freeway is a place called Ology, which is a place where students can go to get their math classes done quickly and transfer their credits to another school.
Students enrolled in Ology do not have to take and pay for lower level classes that do not count towards graduation and they go to one class that has no more than eight students.
Ology has a “pass or don’t pay” promise. If students don’t get their money’s worth, they will get their money back. Ology wants their students to succeed and they want them to pass.
The students, however, have to make sure to hand in assignments, take tests, work hard and fulfill the requirements to pass the class. If students do those things and do not pass, they will give the money back or be allowed a retake of the course for free.
Ology takes students through BYU’s Independent Study math course and covers material to help them succeed. Once students are done, they can transfer their credits to any other Utah college. Even if they are in Math 950, they are still able to finish in just one class.
The courses offered through Ology are 1030, 1040 and 1050 math courses. The 1050 course is for anyone who needs to obtain their general math requirement. For this class, students enroll in BYU’s math 110 course through their Independent Study program. This class goes through the BYU course and once it’s done, the student can transfer their credit.
Classes are offered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Ology’s 1050 course has an option of a half semester and full semester course. The half semester meets four times a week and the full semester meets two times each week. This helps students to take the course when they have time. The summer courses start May 9.
This class is $999 for the Ology instruction, plus $459 for the online college algebra course and $79 for the MyLabPlus online textbook. If needed, calculus and statistics can then be taken at the college they are enrolled in.
For students who only need Math 1030 or 1040 for their major, Ology Stats is the class to take. This course takes students through BYU’s Independent Study Stats 121 class.
This gives students the QL requirement for graduation. It is only offered two hours a week and meets twice a week. This class is $889, plus $459 for the BYU stats 121 course.

There is no association between Ology and the UVU Math Lab, and your posting implies incorrect information. UVU students should not be led to believe Ology has any association with any math programs at UVU. Thank you.
As an academic advisor at UVU I would caution any student considering a “quick and easy” way around the general education math requirement. I have plenty of students who decide to go the Ology route and end up regretting it (plenty do just fine too I should add). What worries me is that this article does not spend anytime critically examining this business. Is this an article about Ology or an add for Ology?
It does look like an AD for Ology. Good for them. Also, I’m glad you’re just an academic adviser for UVU and NOT an English teacher.
If the UVU Math department would get its act together there would be no incentive for students to take Ology. I personally took Ology several years ago and then took Math 1100 from UVU. I was able to pass both classes with little problem. If the University is worried about a loss of revenue stream then create a learning environment and system that would allow for students to not waste extra time and money to be successful.
THIS class was far from “quick and easy”!! What it was; EFFICIENT and to the POINT! Not everyone wants to major in math, but UVU REQUIRES a pass for math–so BE EFFICIENT and use Ology! I really appreciated the tutors, the program, the tutorials, videos, effort of the staff. VERY PROFESSIONAL and VERY worth it! PUT THE WORK and EFFORT in and you will succeed!! (I was in my late 50’s going back to college and this was not easy–but I worked smart, did the assignments and ended up HIGH HONORS.)
The math department at UVU doesn’t equate. Here’s a simple math problem ;

The revenue generated from the UVU math department is the single financial backing for renovating the school. It’s transparent how lucrative the existing business model takes advantage, and quite frankly it’s disgusting how it takes advantage of it’s students.
To those who advise and avoiding the “quick and easy” route I say STOP with the fear mongering around Ology. It’s an honest service and a solution to greedy and unjust program set forth to generate revenue for the school.
Lets look at the plain facts. UVU’s Math department is littered with adjunct and visiting professors, that hold no stock in the success of their students where as Ology offers a money back guarantee.

I’m currently enrolled at Ology course taking math 1050, and I have to many complains about ology classes, I have never been to much stressed with math homework, sleeping too late and not understanding nothing, the instructor that I have in my course just teach us everyday normally like if we really know all her terms, she understand herself but it is hard for me to get the ideas, I’m really sad about it, because not only the instructor doesn’t help you in the way that Ology says (with small groups to help each student to understand and success in math), it is terrible, I’m having bad dreams every night about my due dates homeworks, because they give you assignments for one day to another for example my last hw due date was may 29, but now I have my other homework for may 30 due date, come on! what’s going on?, all these assignments are so much difficult to resolve,wasting too many…
Don’t waste your money on Ology. If you’re looking to go else where for college in the future it isn’t worth it. Ology is a program only created for Utah colleges only and won’t apply anywhere else.It doesn’t even apply to your GPA score, so it won’t show up as an A+ on your transcript, whether or not you put all of your hard work and effort into these classes. If you’re looking to go even further than a bachelor’s degree you might as well just take the courses at your institute. It looks better on your transcript, and you have tutors there at the university that will also offer you their time for free. Unlike Ology you have to pay for the time you are with a tutor. There’s no short cuts to life without there being a catch. Don’t enroll in Ology, just take your regular courses in college. You get financial aide to cover part of your classes anyways.
Ology was THE BEST. I took Stats from Ology this Summer & I don’t have enough good things to say about it! It took some hard work for a few months, but now I don’t have to spend years doing it! I STINK at math and my tutor helped me understand principles that I never have been able to grasp anywhere else. If you don’t want to pay for a tutor at Ology, they have FREE tutoring at the Independent Study office at BYU. Jennifer is right, it doesn’t show up on your GPA, but who gets an A+ in math anyway?! If you were that good at math you could test out of it. I like that it doesn’t count for or against my GPA. Unless your degree is math focused and you plan on getting a masters in that area, no college will care that you took from Ology/ BYU IS.
P.S. Erik, maybe it was that you had a hard time understanding English and not just math? That WOULD make it difficult to pass.
I agree with Jennifer Yang, It is a waste of money and time, Lacie, I do understand English well to have passed all my English courses at UVU with A, and I don’t think that was the problem. There are many mistakes on the program that they must fix before invite people to take their courses and pay for it. Just giving you a book and a teacher that does not really help their students individually is not the solution. I DID NOT PASS THE COURSE AND YOU DID NOT GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK AS YOU SAY. You put many requisites to get that privilege, and it is very difficult for a student to achieve all their homework’s on time because it is not only one if not many exercises very difficult to work on it by yourself. I had to pay tutoring once for 30 dll an hour. And it didn’t resolve anything. You must take three difficult test at BYU there are two chances to retake it again but you must pay 10 dll…
Ology isn’t a quick and easy way out. You still have to work for it. But you have to work less there and have more personable teachers. Plus you don’t have to pay for extra non-credit classes if you get below 1010 level on your placement tests. Why should UVU be allowed to do that? I’m glad someone is competing with UVU. It helps keep them honest. And when you go thru Ology, it counts for BYU independent study. So don’t believe this stuff that it doesn’t count or transfer over. Also the reason why most people don’t get their money back from Ology is because they didn’t go to the required amount of days and didn’t get their homework done on-time. I would choose Ology over UVU’s Math department any day. I wonder why UVU has a math department issue while other schools are just fine. Just saying.
I don’t want to review UVU’s math department, as this is a review on the service I received from OLOGY. I had a very positive experience going the OLOGY route, and would recommend it to ANY student.
The staff and instructors were outstanding, and the curriculum was set up perfectly to enhance the STATS 121 course offered through BYU-Independent Study.
Ology Rocks! They are simply a tutoring company that helps you through the BYU classes. BYU credits transfer to universities all over the country.
It would have taken me 3 remedial classes at UVU to cover the pre req’s for Math 1050 (the 4th class) the get the credits I needed for a UVU Associates degree. Ology created a great schedule, exam study sessions and classes that helped me get the credit I needed in one semester instead of 4 UVU semesters, (assuming I could pass all the UVU classes). The testing is all through BYU.
It is unfortunate that UVU makes it so difficult for students to get their math credit!
Ology is horrible. Uvu math department is terrible. Two wrongs don’t make a right but they do take your money. I could write fifty pages on how both programs are fails. How can either group of rip off artists sleep at night? There may be a minute few people who have passes ology but their claims are false and should be sued. Uvu doesn’t claim to have a good math department…in fact, I can not think of anything worse other than ology. I have a degree in math. I’m not an English major and am sad for those who make fun of math people for having poor grammar skills. Poor grammar is what defines a mathematician. They think logically…unlike those strange haired feminist radicals who are English majors. If someone was to make fun of a group it wouldn’t be math people it would be those English majors for having a degree that virtually does nothing for any economy. How many…

I got my math credit from Ology. The program was amazing and the tutors were amazing as well. I took this class with a friend who unfortunately did not pass, but she DID get her money back without any hesitation. Of course there are requirements in getting your money back, if there wasn’t, people would take advantage of Ology. Pretty much, If you do all of your homework, you’ll get your money back if you don’t pass so obviously a couple people on this forum were just slackers. I don’t regret a thing. I am currently watching my boyfriend struggle through UVU’s failed math program, it’s disgusting. He’s even overheard one of his math teachers talk to another professor about how only half of their students are predicted to pass. It’s ridiculous.
