Incoming freshman students are the inaugural class invited to the first ever Freshman Convocation scheduled for Aug. 27 at 6:00 p.m.
The event will take place in the UCCU Center, beginning with a faculty and advisor processional. A video will follow as part of the presentation to highlight what incoming students will can expect for their education.
“A couple of years ago, President Holland asked the Student Success and Retention department to do some research and come up with an opportunity where he could address the entire freshman class,” said Michelle Kearns, director of Student Success and Retention. “President Holland felt that it was really important that he have that opportunity for students to recognize how much value he puts into the individual student.”
President Matthew Holland is slated to deliver a convocation address to all freshman embarking on their university experience at UVU. Students are encouraged to bring their immediate families to the event.
The hour-long program will also include a introduction of school spirit with Student Body President, Chad Workman and UVU mascot, Willy the Wolverine.
Freshman Convocation is being hosted by the Student Success and Retention department as part of Utah Valley University’s First Year Experience program.
“Our purpose and existence is to help students build a foundation for success and to keep them here through graduation,” Kearns said. “Everything we do has that goal in mind.”
Wrapping up Freshman Convocation will be a family tailgate party held outside to the west of the UCCU Center in Pace Park. Fire@will will perform at the party and a barbecue dinner will be provided.
“The Convocation kind of kicks off the official Week of Welcome, so there will be student-oriented events all week long,” said Kearns.
Freshman convocation is for all new freshman that have begun this summer semester or will begin in the fall. Students can reserve their spot at the event by visiting www.uvu.edu/firstyear/programs/convocation.html.
