IRANIAN MOVIE SHOWING: UVU’s Cinema Studies program, along with the International Cinema, will be showing the award-winning Iranian film “Persepolis” on Aug. 28 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in LI 120.
Dr. Stephen Gibson, who teaches in the UVU English & Literature Department, will be presenting an introduction to the film. A group discussion is expected to follow the showing.

“Persepolis” is a 2007 animated film based on Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The story follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution, which goes horribly wrong with Islamic fundamentalists taking power and creating a new theocratic tyranny.

UV EXPERIENCE: To learn about the different services available on UVU campus, visit the courtyard, where booths will be set up for students to learn how to get involved with different departments and clubs. Booths will be up Aug. 27-29.

National Briefs

DEMOCRATIC NOMINATIONS: A deal has been made between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton that will allow Clinton’s name to be placed in nomination at next week’s Democratic nominating convention. The former rivals announced the agreement on Aug. 14 in a joint statement. Obama said in a statement that having Clinton’s name on the roll call would be a symbol of unity.

FILES OF STRATEGIC SERVICES RELEASED: The National Archives opened more than 35,000 personnel files of those who served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). OSS was an early version of the CIA created during World War II by President Roosevelt.

RECYCLED LEFTOVER FOOD: Residents in California have blue bins for recycling plastic, green bins for yard clippings and black bins for everything else. Another bin will be added next month which will be for leftovers. About 5,000 households will receive this fourth bin that will be used in a pilot program to collect food scraps for composting.

FOSSILS FOUND IN NEW MEXICO: A rare marine find of fossilized imprints of a jellyfish-like creature were found about 20 miles northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Scientists estimate they are 290 million years old.
