Changing Horses is Kweller’s fourth album to date, but his first to fall under the country music genre. And whether or not the words “country” and “music” in the same breath are an instant turn-off, keep reading. His country is nothing like the drawled, my-dog-got-ran-over, wife-is-an-alcoholic-type of country that keeps performers like Toby Keith on the charts. His is a playful, genre-bending sound – a charming voice, genuinely moving lyrics, several saloon-esque piano melodies and a little twang for good measure. This is country music through the lens of Kweller.
Although Kweller’s previous albums sounded more like indie rock ballads and anti-folk melodies, this Texas-bred musician acknowledges, “Country music was the soundtrack to my life. It’s still a big part of who I am. When Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson [sic] come on the radio, somethin’ happens inside.”
Before running off to his concert on June 13, preview a few of his latest songs for free on his Myspace page, myspace.com/benkweller. The song “Sawdust Man” is sure to induce the busting of a few fledgling country-hued dance moves as you imagine how thrilling it would be to hear it live in concert.
