Keys to my heart: What Wolverines look for in a significant other
Sean Stoker | Editor-at-large
Everyone wants to love and be loved. But not everyone is born with the necessary skills to navigate the twists and turns of the never-ending journey to find a companion. Luckily for them, we got all got dressed up, swallowed a mint, and made a date with a few of UVU’s travelers on that path, and figured out what Wolverines want when it comes to significant others.
Devere Morris | Junior
What gets you interested? If they have interests and things that they’re passionate about.
What keeps you hooked? If they’re funny and interesting. If they have a plan and know what they’re doing and what they want. When they don’t, there’s no reason to be attracted to them.
How would you like to be approached by an admirer? Very straightforward. I don’t like when people beat around the bush. If you like me, then say it. Don’t make me guess, because I’ll be the same way.
What about you do others find attractive? I am passionate about what I like. If I don’t like you, I will tell you.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? I’m all about “everything happens for a reason.” Wherever you’re going to meet your significant other, you’re going to meet them, so it could be anywhere.
Nate Fitzgerald | Sophomore
What gets you interested? The way a person looks, and how they present themselves. I like people that dress classy or modest.
What keeps you hooked? Personality. If they’re easy to get along with, like to have fun, be spontaneous and go with the flow. They should have standards, but be willing to change those standards, and are able to help the other person.
What about you do others find attractive? I’ve been told I have a pretty good smile. They say my dimples are nice.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? I don’t think it really matters. If the right person is going to show up, it could be anywhere. You just have to be looking for that person.

What gets you interested? It’s a combination of things. I first got interested in my current girlfriend when she was joking. She made me laugh, and she made people around her laugh. She had this air about her of a person you want to be around, and I think that’s a big thing, being comfortable around someone, and it’s something I definitely look for
What keeps you hooked? Depth. When a person is something more than what you see initially, and you begin to discover whom that person is, then you get addicted. You don’t want to stop discovering who that person is.
How would you like to be approached by an admirer? Be straightforward. I especially don’t like it when people try to manipulate you into doing what they’re afraid to do. I’ve had people try to get me to ask them on dates. If you want to go on a date with me, or if you want to hang out or be friends, or whatever, just straight up ask me about it.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? School. It shows they have a drive to do something. No matter how small it is, they’re putting forth that effort to be at school.
Hailey Tuckett | Freshman
What gets you interested? I notice how they talk to people and how they treat others. That’s a big thing for me. If they open a door for somebody, I think, “Oh, they have a heart.”
What keeps you hooked? If they are loving and accepting of my lifestyle, and my family’s lifestyle. I think that’s what keeps me most interested. I have a really crazy family and then I’m LDS and would like to be married in the temple someday, so they have to want to be married in the temple, but also OK with other people doing things differently.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? It would be nice to meet someone at school because you know they’re going to go somewhere with their life, or at least they’re planning on it.
Brad Abney | Sophomore
What gets you interested? How they’re dressed. If they’re dressed a certain way then I can see what kind of person she is.
What keeps you hooked? Their interest in me. Obviously, on a first date you’re interested in them, but a lot of times they don’t ask you questions back. Like if I ask, “What’s your favorite movie?” and they answer but then they don’t ask me anything. But if the interest keeps coming back, I’ll be more interested in her if she’s more interested in me.
What about you do others find attractive? I’m a pretty positive person.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? Probably at Brighton, because I’m a big snowboarder. And if I saw her there, I would already know she’s tight, and we can find common ground.
Camilla Welch | Junior
What gets you interested? He has to be a genuine person. If he doesn’t care about his future then he’s not what I’m looking for. And he has to have a positive outlook on life. You don’t want to be with someone who’s not there to help you out.
What keeps you hooked? I’m not very experienced with love, I’m more studious. What gets me hooked is the mutual connection of some things that we have together – some subjects we can relate to. We should have some of the same interests, same pasts, or some way I can relate to him.
I’m not going to have a weird pickup line; I would just try to find something we have in common. I don’t mind if a guy talks to me or if I go up and talk to him, though (the latter) is rare unless I really like a guy.
What about you do others find attractive? Lots of guys tell me that my skin’s really pretty, and I think, “OK, my skin’s a hot commodity.” As for inner qualities, I’m very positive, and always looking for something new to learn or change, like a new perspective in life.
Where’s the ideal location to meet someone for the first time? Where you are at, friend-wise or school-wise will indicate the quality of people you will meet. A good place to meet somebody would be at a library, school, or a bookstore or just somewhere where you have similar interests. I like dancing, but I doubt I’m going to meet my husband or boyfriend at a club or a bar, because that’s not very ideal. It tells you what his priorities are.
