Wear green and win prizes
“Wolverine Wednesday is intended to increase school spirit,” said Gretchen Palmer, a student life intern overseeing the event. “It’s an opportunity for students to get a cheap lunch and socialize.”
The main attraction of the gathering is indeed the cheap lunch catered by J Dawgs, which offers a large, delicious hotdog with a choice of ketchup or J Dawgs’ special sauce – a tasty condiment similar to a sweet barbeque sauce. There are also a variety of typical hotdog toppings to choose from, as well as a drink for $3 if the purchaser is wearing green. Cost is $4 without the school color.
If wearing green, participants are allowed to spin to win a prize. This oftentimes involves standing in a relatively long line to spin a wheel that when stopped will point to the designated prize, which varies from a Sharpee marker to a candy bar or a Tide pen.
Wolverine Wednesday also provides entertainment for those seated in the tables around Centre Stage as they eat their lunch. Typically, a sports team is featured so that students have the opportunity to get acquainted with Wolverine Athletics.
“We have many different teams and clubs come to Wolverine Wednesday,” said Palmer. “Some of them include the International Club, Color Guard and Miss UVU.”
This fun mid-week activity is not only for students but also family members and friends as well. Kathie Debenham, the associate vice president of academic affairs, enjoys a J Dawg with her daughter and grandson once or twice a month.
“It’s fun to come and get free treats for my grandbaby,” said Debenham.
