Wrestling hosts national heavyweights #13 UNI and #3 ISU over the weekend to open up Big 12

Utah Valley University wrestling fell to nationally ranked Big 12 opponents in the #13 University of Northern Iowa Panthers (4-2, 2-1) 9-34 last friday and the #3 Iowa State Cyclones (10-2, 3-0) 9-31 last saturday.

The Wolverines found themselves down 0-24 early in the team score after dropping their first 6 matchups to the Panthers, two matchups down by fall. 

Demetrius Romero at 174 picked up the Wolverine’s first win over the Panther’s Lance Runyon in a 7-4 decision giving the Wolverines 3 points. Two matchups later Evan Bockman picked up 6 points for the Wolverines in a forfeit. 

Chase Trussell fell to UNI’s Tyrell Gordon in a 3-1 decision ending the duel in a 9-34 loss for the Wolverines. 

In the Wolverine’s first matchup of their duel against Iowa State Kase Mauger picked up 3 points over Caleb Fuessley in a 10-9 decision. Ty Smith picked up a win shortly after in a 5-0 decision tying the team score at 6-6. Iowa State would go on to win the next three matchups by decision, sudden victory, and fall picking up 12 points.

Romero picked up his second win of the weekend with a win over Carter Schmidt, a 6-2 decision narrowing the deficit to 9-18. The Cyclones won the final three matchups of the duel bringing the final score to a 9-31 defeat for the Wolverines. 

The Wolverines travel up north this upcoming weekend to take on Big 12 members #18 South Dakota State this Friday and #15 North Dakota State on Sunday in two ranked Big 12 duels.
