UVU is hosting its annual math week March 16-20. Here is a rundown of some of the activities that students and the public can attend. It will start with the Math Week carnival from 11 am – 2 pm in the PE concourse. All UVU students and employees are welcomed to this event. Chocolate math therapy will be held in SC 206A at 2 pm. There will be a student baking competition Tuesday, March 17 at noon in the quad courtyard. A few rules to remember: entries must be homemade, round or circular in shape, and entries must be brought to the quad at noon when judging begins. Chocolate math therapy follows at 1 pm in SC 206A. There will be an Integration Bee from 3-5 pm in SB 279.
On Wednesday, March 18 there is another chance to attend chocolate math therapy at 10 am in SC 206A. Dr. Adam Bargteil, assistant professor in the School of Computing at the University of Utah, will be speaking from1- 3 pm in LI 120. Bargteil’s research focuses on the field of computer graphics and animation. There will also be a sudoku tournament at 3 pm in LA 124.
On Thursday March 19 there will be crafty math art from 2- 3:50 pm in LA 210. The factoring bee starts at 4 pm in LA 007. That evening there will be a showing of “Shrek the Third” at 7 pm, Centre stage.
Friday March 20, Dr. Curtis Welborn will be speaking on the math involved in areas of movie creation for animation, movies and video games at 1 pm in SC 213a.Welborn, UVU associate professor in Computing Network Science, has worked in Aerospace and Telecommunication industries for over 17 years. The last event for math week will be the Amazing Math Race. This race is held for all students at 2 pm in LA 221q. Pre-register at [email protected]
All UVU students and employees are welcomed and encouraged to attend all events, however participation is limited to UVU students only. Families and friends in the community are welcome to movie night, chocolate math therapy and the guest speaker events. All math week events are free of charge and sponsored by the Math and Developmental Math Departments.
