Race to a family’s aid

schedule 2 min read

Motorcycle riding is known for excitement, speed and, more often than not, reckless behavior. However, the upcoming Saturday night motocross event will focus on helping a family.

On Oct. 23, the UCCU Center will host the Western Motocross Nationals. It will be the first dirt event held at the UCCU Center. The highlight of the night will be a charity event, “Race for Bruce,” which will be benefiting the family of Bruce McGowan, a local firefighter killed in September.

There will also be another charitable opportunity that night, which will benefit the UVU food pantry.

The charity race is open to firefighters, currently working or retired, as well as law enforcement. It will be for any age and race experience and will have an award ceremony with the presentation of a check to McGowan’s family. There will be a $35 fee to participate in the race with the fee going directly to the family of McGowan.

Students who present an ID and a can of food will get in for the discounted price of $5. The donated food will go to the UVU food pantry. Discounted tickets are available at the UCCU Center box office. Cans of food are also welcome from anyone.

Regular cost for adults is $8 and $5 for children ages 6 to 12.  General admission tickets are on sale now and are available at www.SmithsTix.com or at the UCCU Center box office.

The event will start with open races at 10 a.m. These races are open to anyone that wants to compete. Registration for the races are available online.

Doors open for qualifying at 5 p.m., with the pro main event beginning at 7 p.m. It is the second event of the winter series for the Western Motocross Nationals. Top level racers will compete as part of the main event.

Volunteers are also needed for the event. Positions needed include flaggers, ushers, setup crews, as well as other volunteers. To volunteer and for other information, visit www.WesternMxNationals.com
