Seattle, WA — On a night that the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team was hoping for a treat, they got a trick instead as Karli White and Seattle University had other ideas for the Wolverines. White scored what became the game-winning goal in 53rd minute and the Redhawks held on to defeat UVU 1-0 and secure the top seed for the upcoming Western Athletic Conference tournament next week.
UVU will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed, which is the highest that the Wolverines have finished in WAC regular season play.
For the ninth time in the last 10 matches between the two teams, it was Seattle who made the play necessary to win the game. White scored when she took a cross from teammate Julie Moravec and put it past UVU goalkeeper Jessica Duffin to put the Redhawks on the board.
UVU tried attacking and being aggressive but it just wasn’t enough. They outshot the Redhawks 7-5 including 5-3 in shots on goal. Brianna Smallidge had five saves in goal for Seattle including a save in the 88th minute off a Breanna McCarter shot to preserve the shutout and the WAC regular season title. It is the third straight regular season title for Seattle.
The WAC tournament starts on November 5 in Bakersfield, Calif. The Wolverines receive a bye in the first round and they will face the winner of of the match between UMKC and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on November 6.
