UVU has its own disc golf course, located around the ponds between the main campus buildings and the baseball field.

Disc golf started in the late 60’s by a man whose name was “Steady” Ed Headrick. He was the father of not only disc golf, but of modern day disc sports.

The first disc golf course started in what was then called Oak Grove Park in La Canada Flintridge, Calif. It’s a sport that’s growing continually. Today, millions play on more than one thousand courses throughout the United States. Some of the courses are even located at Utah ski resorts — Solitude being one of them — and are open during the summer.

UVU has a disc golf league that anyone can join. They have league meetings every Tuesday at 4pm at the disc golf course on campus. UVU spent nearly $10,000 for its disc golf equipment and course. The course has 13 holes which are for the most part par 3’s, with one practice hole. In the next 1-2 years, UVU looks to add another hole or two to the course.

Participants in the disc golf league have the opportunity to win prizes in league play. Some of the current league players made up an 18-hole course, which means anyone can make up a creative course to their liking.

There is a Disc Golf Association which has disc golf players playing in leagues and tournaments throughout the country. Disc golfers, much like regular golfers, have disc golf bags to hold their different discs. They make discs that are made differently depending on the situation.
Discs can be purchased at the Outdoor Resource Center, which is located north of the bookstore in the Student Center.

Disc golf is now popular enough that there is a video game, Big Beach Sports, for the Wii that has disc golf in it. The disc golf course on campus is definitely worth its time to play, and it may be just the game to get hooked on.
