Everlyn Kemboi, women’s cross-country finish strong at Cowboy Jamboree

The Utah Valley University women’s cross-country team took seventh place in the 6-kilometer race at the Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday, Sep. 24, at the Oklahoma State University Cross-Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma. UVU’s Everlyn Kemboi led the women by taking third overall in the meet while Mazzie Melaney Preston took 23rd and Hannah Branch took 51st overall. 

The Wolverines finished behind Oklahoma State University, Northern Arizona University, Brigham Young University, Colorado State University, the Univeristy of Stanford, and the University of Syracuse while placing in front of the University of Washington, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Michigan. There were 215 total runners that competed in the race representing 20 schools. The Wolverines scored 199 points while combining for a total race time of 1:45:36.

Following two OSU runners, Kemboi finished in third with a time of 20:22.2, only 5.1 seconds behind first-place finisher Natalie Cook of OSU. Preston crossed the finish line 32 seconds later, placing 23rd overall with a time of 20:54.2. Branch finished third for the Wolverines in 51st place overall with a time of 21:19.5.

Madison Flippence and Maggie Zwahlen capped off the scoring for the Wolverines with Flippence finishing 65th overall with a time of 21:28.7 and Zwahlen in 69th place with a time of 21:31.6. 

The next three finishers for the Wolverines were Emma Mahon in 98th place with a time of 21:52.1, Hailey Phillips in 101st place with a time of 21:56, and Taylor Viertel finished in 117th place with a time of 22:11.2. Elizabeth Zwahlen finished the top 120 with a time of 22:13.5.

Eliese Hohmann and Mara Holmes were the last two finishers for the Wolverines, respectively. Hohmann finished 140th with a time of 22:36.6 and Holmes finished 172nd with a time of 23:32.7. 

Ari Trimble and Caila Odekirk were listed as “Did Not Finish.”

The Wolverines will next compete in the Paul Short Run invitational on Friday, Sep. 30, at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
