A’s add Holliday

The low-budget Oakland A’s helped themselves recently as they acquired outfielder Matt Holliday in a trade with the Colorado Rockies. Holliday, a major contributor to the Rockies team from a season ago that went to the World Series, will add his big bat to the Oakland lineup. For compensation, the Rockies receive right-handed reliever Huston Street, lefty starter Greg Smith, and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Baseball awards handed out

As the Major League Baseball awards trickle in, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has been named American League manager of the year. Maddon ran away with the award after leading the traditional American League bottom feeders to the World Series. In the National League, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella won the award after leading the loveable losers to the best record in the National League. Giants’ pitcher Tim Lincecum won the N.L. Cy Young in his second season. The slender, second-year player went 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA on the season while leading the league in strikeouts with 265.
