Wittman Named GWC Female Athlete of the Week

UTPA’s J.J. Hernandez was named the Great West Conference Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week, while Utah Valley’s Jazmine Wittman and South Dakota’s Crystal Schiernbeck both shared honors on the women’s side for the week ending April 5, the league office announced Tuesday.

Wittman earned co-honors after she led the UVU womens’ team by winning the 100m dash with a blazing time of 12.21 at the BYU Cougar Invitational this past Friday. The sophomore was also a member of Utah Valley’s relay team that placed third on the day in the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.30.

Schiernbeck earns co-weekly honors after claiming first place honors in the 100 meter hurdles at the Vance Butler Invite this past weekend. She posted a time of 14.98, which marks the best in the Great West Conference.

At a meet with some of the most prestigious track and field programs in attendance, UTPA’s Hernandez notched a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this past Friday (April 3) at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. The senior finished two seconds ahead of his competition and marked his second best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 9:09.48.

This marks the second time that Wittman has earned such honors; she was also named an indoor female track and field athlete of the week back on Jan. 27, 2009.

Doxey GWC Player of the Week

Utah Valley freshman Kirk Doxey was named the Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Doxey was 8-for-18 on the week with five home runs, 10 RBI, seven runs scored and a slugging percentage of an outstanding 1.444. The outfielder became the first UVU player with three home runs in a game and tied a school record with six batted in Saturday’s loss to the Air Force Academy. He also had a HR, double and triple and three RBI in the Wolverines’ 12-10 win over Air Force earlier in the weekend series.
