Volleyball: UVU falls to Washington in Hawaii
The Utah Valley University volleyball team faced their second nationally ranked opponent in as many days as they took the court Friday night in Honolulu against No. 6 University of Washington. UW (6-0) came into the game with an unblemished record and looked like a team on a mission as they handled UVU (3-6) in three sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-17).
“The girls really worked hard, but we got beat by a very good team tonight,” said head coach Sam Atoa.
The Huskies came on strong in the first set, taking a commanding early lead. The Wolverines bounced back, cutting the deficit to four after a kill from Brighton Taylor made it 13-9. But the Huskies ended on a 10-2 run securing the set win.
The second set looked to be going much like the first with Washington jumping out to an early lead. But the Wolverines came roaring back, scoring 5 straight points and taking a three-point lead at 12-9. Washington’s Courtney Schwann lit a fuse for her team as she recorded a kill to stop the UVU scoring streak. Washington then went on a streak of their own which propelled them to the win in the second set.
Both teams came out aggressively in the third set, trading points in the early going. Alexis Davies recorded two kills to pull the Wolverines to within three at 16-13, but that’s as close as they would get as they seemed to run out of gas and Washington pulled away with it.
Alexis Davies stood out for the Wolverines in this one, totaling nine kills and adding three blocks. Pre-season all-conference selection Madison Dennison added five blocks of her own. On the other side of the net Crissy Jones carried the load for the Huskies tallying 11 kills and eight blocks.
UVU will close out the Hawaii Outrigger Challenge facing the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sept. 10 in Honolulu.
