Las Vegas, NV — The Utah Valley University Wolverines dropped a heartbreaker to the UNLV Rebels 4-3 in overtime on Friday afternoon in women’s soccer action at Johann Field in Las Vegas.
It marks the second loss on the season for the Wolverines with both losses coming against opponents from the Mountain West Conference.
Hayley Wilson scored seven minutes into the game putting UNLV on the board first. It didn’t take long for the Wolverines to respond when Sydney Fitzpatrick scored 29 seconds later to make it 1-1. In the 25th minute, Sheridan Fox scored her fourth goal of the season when she put the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to give UVU a 2-1 lead.
Jodi Barber got UNLV right back in the game as she scored in the 27th minute to tie the game up at two. Jamie Brown then put UVU back in front off a sweet pass from Sara Callister in front of the goal to make it 3-2 at the half.
More offensive action came from UNLV in the second half, which led to a Chidera Akubuilo score on a penalty kick 20 minutes into the half. Both teams down the stretch played great defense and at the end of regulation it was tied 3-3.
There was only one shot taken on goal by both teams in overtime and it just happened to be the one to end the game. Denali Murnan scored the golden goal on a header with 30 seconds left in the first overtime to win the game for the Rebels.
Despite the loss, UVU looks to come back on Sunday afternoon as they take on SUU in Cedar City at 1 p.m. MT.
