Winning streak snapped at Utah State Invitational
Utah Valley placed second in invitational with wins over UC Riverside and Utah State
The lady Wolverines had their six-match winning streak snapped by Loyola Marymount at the Utah State Invitational Sept. 17-18.
UVU began the invitational against the UC Riverside Highlanders, a team they had met only seven days prior at the Arizona State Invitational. The Wolverines swept the Highlanders in three matches, 25-21, 25-20 and 26-24.
Senior outside hitter Kayli Doxey lead the Wolverines offensively with 13 kills, while junior teammate Chelsey Heaps finished with 10. Freshman-standout setter Brookelyn Campbell finished with 31 assists and four digs and senior libero Kathleen Stevens put 16 digs on the board.
The Wolverines matched up next with undefeated in-state opponent Utah State. They fell behind two sets and came from behind to take the match in five sets, 16-25, 27-29, 27-25, 25-23 and 20-18, giving the Aggies their first loss of the season.
Doxey finished with a double-double, match-high 26 kills and 10 digs. Heaps also put up a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs while Campbell finished with a big 49 assists, nine digs and six blocks. Stevens finished with a match-high 31 digs and senior teammate Dani Robison had eight kills and six blocks.
The Wolverines finished off the invitational with a match against Loyola Marymount, taking the loss in a four-set match, 24-20, 13-25, 16-25 and 22-25. Despite the loss, the team placed second in the invitational and outside hitters Doxey and Heaps were named to All-Tournament Team.
Doxey finished the final match with 12 kills and six digs and Heaps finished with nine kills and two digs. Campbell finished with 38 assists, three kills and six digs, while Stevens finished with 18 digs.
The Wolverines will return to home court on Oct. 5, where they will face in-state opponent Weber State. The team will then play Great West opponent Chicago State on Oct. 7, followed by BYU on Oct. 9.
