Wolverines draw against New Mexico State in WAC opener
Utah Valley opens WAC play at NWSU in a 1-1 draw.
On Friday the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team competed in a match against the New Mexico State University Aggies, finishing with a 1-1 draw.
Neither team scored any goals within the first match. This was the case until the 36th minute when junior Ashley Hughes broke down the left side of the field and found teammate Heather Stainbrook just outside of the four-yard box with a cross for an easy tap-in to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The second half picked up pace as six fouls were committed, including one yellow card awarded to both sides. In the 72nd minute, NMSU’s Bianca Chacon equalized the match after firing a shot just outside of the goalie box finding the upper right 90.
The Wolverines outshot the Aggies 16-11 but put only five shots on goal. The Aggies had the advantage for shots on goal with seven compared to the Wolverines five. UVU’s Idalia Serrana led the match in saves with six.
A draw gives the Wolverines a WAC record of 0-0-1. The Wolverines will continue WAC play at Sam Houston on Sep. 18 at noon MT.
