Wolverines snag two from Utah State

The UVU softball team played host to the Utah State Aggies for a doubleheader on a blustery Tuesday afternoon.

But the high winds didn’t deter the Wolverines as they swept its neighbors to the north with scores of 3-1 and 13-4, while tying a couple of team records in the process.

In the second game, UVU blasted four home runs to tie the school record for most in a game. Megan Gardner also wrote her name in the school record books by recording four hits, which also ties for most hits in a game.

But it took a while for the Wolverine bats to wake up.

In the first game, both teams managed just five hits each, but it proved to be enough for UVU as they picked up the 3-1 victory. Relief pitcher Jessica Martin picked up the win for the Wolverines.

Gardner got things started early in the second game with a three-run shot in the first inning. Later in the same inning, Amanda Perez hit her team-leading fourth home run of the year to make it 5-0 for the Wolverines.

After two Aggie runs, Meghan Woodworth blasted a three-run dinger in the fourth to extend UVU’s lead to 9-2.

Utah State would cut into the lead again with two more runs before UVU’s Amber Sackett dialed up a grand slam that put the game out of reach.

Kyli Flanary notched the win for the Wolverines to even her record at 6-6.

With the wins, UVU improves to 12-15 while winning seven of its last eight games.

Coach Todd Fairbourne said he’s pleased with his team’s play of late.

“I am proud of them because they have learned how to win,” he said. “They are winning against better and better teams.”

That bodes well for the Wolverines as in-state games against Utah, Weber State and BYU loom ahead.
