LAC CRUCES, N.M.—Coming off of their win against UT Rio Grande Valley Friday, the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team settled for a draw against the New Mexico State Aggies Sunday.
UVU came out ready to put the Aggies away early, and recorded the first goal of the match in the 39th minute. Breanna McCarter found the back of the net with her first goal of the season.
During the second half, UVU again came out ready to make a statement as midfielder Adrene Harding nabbed her first goal of the season as well, with McCarter credited on the assist. However, NMSU would not be denied, as it was able to get by goalkeeper Brooklyn Nielson with back-to-back goals in the 65th and 68th minute of the match.
With neither team able to score and take the upper hand in the match, the game headed to overtime. McCarter missed a shot wide right and Nielsen recorded her second save of the afternoon.
Double overtime was inevitable with the score still tied 2-2, but once again neither team was unable to capitalize and walk away with the win.
With the tie, UVU ends its weekend road trip with a 7-6-2 record on the season and 1-2-1 in the conference. NMU ends with 4-10-2 and 1-1-2.
The game was very evenly matched as UVU led with 18 shots and four shots on goal, to NMSU 9 and four.
Breanna DeWaal led UVU with five shots, Tori Smith and McCarter followed close behind with three, Melanie Ostler with two and Abby Jameson, Taylor Kirk, Kalli Suesue, Adrene Harding and Rylee Gritton each with one.
Next, UVU will host Chicago State Thursday, Oct. 20, at Clyde Field. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT.
