The UVU women’s soccer team (3-4-0) finally returned to Clyde Field for its home opener after a brutal six-game road streak to start the season. With the Wolverine fans behind them, they dominated the entire night against Wyoming (2-3-1) on Friday, thanks to Breanna McCarter’s two goals, securing the decisive 2-1 win.
“We felt comfortable at 2-0 and felt like we were playing well. We had a good rhythm,” said UVU head coach Chris Lemay. “To give up a goal late put us in a bit of a frenzy, and I thought our overall performance was really good.”
McCarter recorded her first goal of the season late in the first half, with an assist from Breanna DeWaal and Hannah Bruce. The pass came down the right side from DeWaal and McCarter found the bottom left corner of the net with the shot.
McCarter’s night wasn’t finished, as she doubled her scoring output in the second half. The second goal came by a throw in from Bruce, with McCarter shooting it at the top right corner of the box, cementing her brace in phenomenal fashion. Wyoming goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree missed securing the ball by mere inches.
“We’re starting to get in the rhythm of things and we’re finding our groove,” said McCarter. “It feels so good (to score two goals). It’s amazing. The atmosphere is great; it was just so fun.”
Wyoming’s Jemma House was able to get one back in the 83rd minute, but it was too little too late. She corralled the ball off of a turnover on a bad clearing attempt and broke the Wolverine shutout, getting the shot past Brooklyn Nielsen, who made five saves on the night.
The road reprieve was brief for the Wolverines. They will hit the road again to face Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. The match is set to start at 5 p.m.
