After being defeated in 2OT by UNLV on Friday, UVU looked to their match against Cal State Northridge with hopes of getting their second win of the season. Instead, the day ended with the Wolverines’ third overtime defeat of the young season, this one by a score of 2-1.
CSUN started strong by drawing first blood during the first half, with a header goal from Ariana Tran in the 18th minute. The period ended with CSUN leading the Wolverines 1-0, making this the first time this season that UVU was held scoreless during a first half.
After halftime, it took UVU 19 minutes into the second half to even the match with a goal from Breanna DeWaal, giving her three goals on the season. Her shot was inside the box from the right near the post, knotting things up 1-1. Neither team was able to capitalize from shots taken for the rest of regulation, either missing wide or being met with good goalkeeping from both sides.
After the start of OT, the Matadors secured the win just two minutes in off the foot of Marissa Favela, recording her third goal of the season.
Brooklyn Nielsen finished the match with a season high five saves. DeWaal led UVU with six shots, including three on goal.
UVU will continue their lengthy opening road stretch next weekend when they head to Oklahoma to face the University of Tulsa on Sep. 1 and Oral Roberts University on Sep. 3.
