PHOENIX–In a match that was evenly played well into extra time, the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of Grand Canyon thanks to Madison Cox’s winning goal.
In the 107th minute, Grand Canyon had a free kick crossed in from the left side of the field and Cox found the space to head in the goal that gave the Lopes the victory.
UVU struck in the second half when Kalli Suesue found Sydney Fitzpatrick streaking down the middle of the field and Fitzpatrick calmly beat the keeper to score the match’s opening goal in the 70th minute. However, the lead only lasted a few minutes as Grand Canyon was able to equalize with a goal of their own from Maria Monterroso.
UVU managed to have 10 shots with five on target on the attacking end, while Sarah Davis managed three saves on the defensive side of the field.
With the loss UVU drops to 6-6-1 and 0-2 in conference play. UVU looks to snap a three match losing streak next week with road games against UT Rio Grande Valley and New Mexico State. The Wolverines kickoff the road trip against the Vaqueros Friday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. MT.
