UVU Women’s Soccer: one step closer to clinching regular season title
The Utah Valley Women’s Soccer team can clinch their second consecutive WAC regular season title after defeating Utah Tech Thursday night.
The Utah Valley Women’s Soccer team can at least a share of their second consecutive Western Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer title after a 7-0 victory over in-state rival, Utah Tech on Thursday, Oct. 19.
Utah Valley can clinch the title outright with a win versus Southern Utah on Monday, Oct. 23.
To clinch a share of the title, Utah Valley would need to tie, and Cal Baptist to win at Abilene Christan.
Utah Valley can lose any title share by losing vs the Thunderbirds, and CBU winning against ACU.
UVU was picked to win the WAC in the preseason conference poll from coaches, and they used the prediction to sport their impressive 6-0-2 conference record as of Oct. 19.
Utah Valley had a rough start to the season, falling to No. 19 Clemson 2-0, then traveled to Salt Lake losing to Utah 5-0, then dropped to eventual No. 1 BYU 6-1.
Since the loss to BYU, Utah Valley has not lost a match, bolstering an impressive 8-0-4 record.
The seven wins including road victories over No. 19 USC and a 4-0 victory against Grand Canyon. It also featured a 10-0 win versus Stephen F. Austin which featured a hat-trick by freshman forward Nixan Jackson.
Jackson would end up winning WAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Utah Valley’s success has been thanks to junior forward Faith Webber who is top-five in goals scored nationally with 14.
UVU reached the WAC championship last year as the one seed, before losing to three seed New Mexico State 1-0 in the final.
Despite the loss, the Wolverines still earned an NCAA tournament bid.
Utah Valley has appeared in the last four WAC Championships, winning the 2020 championship against Seattle U.
The WAC tournament will begin on Oct. 29 in Riverside, California and Utah Valley will be highlighted as the potential one seed if they win the title.
It is unclear whether Utah Valley will need to win the tournament to receive their bid to the NCAA tournament as each conference champion is rewarded with an auto bid.
The Wolverines currently sit at 74 in RPI but have been receiving national ranking votes throughout the season.
