Kicking off the year with pride
UVUSA are planning events and activities for the Week of Welcome to increase student involvement on campus.
Sitting outdoors watching the Avengers, kissing another student for a True Wolverine certificate, eating savory barbecued food, and freshman convocation are some of the activities scheduled for UVUSA’s Week of Welcome.
Eight events are scheduled for this week to appeal to the wide demographic of students. Hayley Hatch, special events chair for UVUSA hopes that students will feel involved by participating in the events at school.
“I think it’s a good way to kick off the year and get students involved right away,” said Hatch. “If there’s nothing they can get involved in right away, the chance of them getting involved later on is less. We provide lots of opportunities for lots of different people.”
The events will be a great way for students to make new friends, get involved, and to latch onto school spirit.
“The university level is a new experience. There’s nothing worse than going to a new school and not knowing anybody, and not breaking out of your shell,” said Steen Hatch, UVUSA Activities Chair.
Hayley Hatch mentioned that she is excited for the Avengers and for the Green Out Dance. She said that last year over 3,000 students came to the event.
“It’s just a big UVU pride fest,” said Haley Hatch, with a smile on her face.
True Wolverine is a tradition that will take place in the courtyard this Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. Two students kiss while standing in a specific spot and then they are considered a True Wolverine. The first 100 students to kiss will not only be given a True Wolverine certificate, but Kisstixx chapstick as well.
Hayley Hatch mentioned that they have student volunteers helping out with Week of Welcome and that students can go to the UVUSA office if they’d like to volunteer.
When asked about her involvement with UVUSA and planning events, Haley Hatch responded, “There is a lot that goes into planning events. I’ve met so many people through this, it’s been really fun planning all the events and reaching out to students, making sure that they feel like it was worth it to come here.”
Haley Hatch also revealed that this fall they will be having about five events each month for students, including art week, the Presidential Fall Ball, the Insomnia Dance, an ugly sweater party, and more.
Today, UVUSA also plans to release information on who is scheduled to perform a concert at UVU later this week.
“There’s a concert, it’s going to be good, but we’re not allowed to reveal it yet,” said Hayley Hatch.
