Just east of the University Mall, a new ultra-modern movie theater opened last Friday.
The Cinemark University Mall, which saw the demise of the nearby University Cinemas dollar theater before construction on the 14 new auditoriums was finished, shows only digital movies.
“Cinemark got its start in the greater Salt Lake City area over 24 years ago, so the area has long been considered our second home,” said Alan Stock, Chief Executive Officer of Cinemark USA, Inc. “It is our distinct honor to bring a state-of-the-art digital theater to Orem and provide the highest quality movie entertainment experience available.”
The theater can be easily compared to the Cinemark 16 in the Provo Towne Centre Mall. Ticket prices are the same, the seats offer the same reclining capabilities, and both will screen limited-release films.
Cory Tarwater, Assistant Manager, could not confirm whether or not the University Mall Cinemark will play more or fewer limited releases than the theater at PTC.
The new theater has a total of 2,440 seats, with individual auditoriums ranging from 112 to 259 seats each. According to Cinemark’s marketing team, the theater will be answering the call to keep children’s films for a longer period of time, keeping them in the smaller auditoriums.
Tickets to 3-D movies will cost $2 above regular ticket prices. Five of the 14 theaters have 3-D capabilities.
Concessions aren’t going to be any less expensive than other local theaters, but the stands are set up in a new way. Instead of being served by the staff, moviegoers go through a buffet-like line, picking popcorn, candy, hot dogs, and drinks at separate stations. Cashiers are at the end of the line.
