Word on the Street: Why are you taking summer classes?
Brianne Browne
Hometown: Lindon, Utah
Year: Sophomore
Major: Marketing
“I’m finishing up my associates here at UVU then transferring to BYU because they have my major, Communication/Marketing with Advertising Emphasis. I am taking summer classes because I need to finish my pre-requisites before September so I can apply for the communication program at BYU. I want to get ahead, but it’s also really fun to take classes during the summer.”
Charlie Dauwalder
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
Year: Freshman
Major: Construction Management
“My wife and kids have all been going to school at UVU; they were all having a lot of fun and learning so much and I wanted to join the fun. I was starting to get a little bored now that I’m retired so I decided to get my mind on learning and trying something new. I’m taking a math class with my son who is still in high school but taking some summer classes through UVU. Going to school has given me and my family the opportunity to do things together.”
Cassidy Silversmith
Hometown: Springville, Utah
Year: Senior
Major: Community Health
“I don’t want to go to school longer than I have to and drag out my education, basically, I just want to hurry and graduate. One of the great things about going in the summer is it’s not so claustrophobic on campus. Even though the classes are more rushed because the courses are shorter, everything still feels more relaxed.”
Ben Larson
Hometown: Price, Utah
Year: Junior
Major: Bio-Engineering
“My wife works here at UVU so I get a discount on tuition, which is great! I currently go to the University of Utah but they don’t offer any of the classes I need during the summer right now.”
Erika Kimber
Hometown: Provo, Utah
Year: Senior
Major: Behavioral Science, Emphasis Psychology
“The new Social Work Bachelor Program starts in 2012 so I am trying to cram in all the classes I need to graduate before the new program begins. I also love the professors in the summer and there is more parking and that alone is fantastic.”
Jake Olson
Hometown: Payson, Utah
Year: Sophomore
Major: Computer Science
“I couldn’t get in to some of the classes I needed in the spring or fall and there are more classes open in the summer. I might as well take classes now while I have time and making it so I can graduate faster. Plus, it feels more relaxed in the summer.”
